Handmade Rug Care Guide | Wool, Jute & Viscose
CARING FOR HANDMADE RUGS
Keep the texture. Enjoy the everyday.
Handmade rugs vary by fiber and construction. The following tips are general guidance, not a substitute for the care requirements of an individual rug. For wool, jute, viscose or delicate specialty fibers, always confirm a cleaning method is suitable before applying moisture or chemicals.
Routine vacuuming
Use gentle suction without a rotating beater bar on chunky loops, shag and delicate handwoven rugs. Start on a discreet area, avoid pulling loose fibers, and vacuum in the direction that does not catch the weave.
Spills and stains
Blot immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth—do not rub. Avoid saturating natural fibers, particularly jute and viscose, and do not apply an untested solution. For stains, spills affecting dyes, or damage, consult a reputable professional cleaner familiar with the rug's materials.
Natural fibers: what to expect
New wool rugs may shed loose surface fibers initially; gentle maintenance and avoiding aggressive brushing can help. Handwoven surfaces and colors can vary slightly from piece to piece. Viscose can be sensitive to moisture and crushing; jute may discolor when wet.
Furniture, sunlight and rug pads
Rotate the rug occasionally to distribute wear and sun exposure. Use a floor-compatible rug pad for grip and cushioning where appropriate, and check the pad materials with the flooring manufacturer. Protect high-traffic areas and check furniture leg pressure on delicate piles.
When to seek professional care
Seek specialized assistance for large spills, persistent stains, odor, color bleeding and deep cleaning. Never machine wash, bleach, tumble dry or steam clean without confirmed manufacturer guidance for the particular rug.
